Seminar: Training for Weekend Warriors (Frieh)
November 16, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm$30
The classic adage tells us “the best way to train for climbing is to go climbing.” And though there is some truth to this statement where does it leave those of us with other commitments? If we only have four hours a week how is our time best spent? In the rock gym? Trail running? Weight lifting? Partying? Should we give up and start playing golf?
Since 2007 John Frieh has attempted to answer this question for both himself and others. His search has resulted in him studying under some of the best coaches in the world. In 2009 John found his way to Gym Jones, a private training facility in Salt Lake City, where he has since enjoyed the opportunity to learn from one of the best Alpinists ever: Mark Twight.
As evidence of his knowledge John has one of the highest success rates of any Alaska alpinist ever. Since his first trip to Alaska in 2009 John has made 16 separate climbing trips to Alaska to climb a total of 14 different routes on different mountains throughout Alaska. Of those routes 10 were first ascents and of those two were nominated for the highly prestigious Piolet d’Or award. John has done all this while working full time for Intel, raising a family, and coaching. John has mentored other Mazamas who were able to successfully prepare and summit challenging routes in Alaska on their very first trip to Alaska.
In this seminar John will introduce and discuss training concepts that if applied will allow for great personal success in climbing without having to quit your job and live out of your car. This seminar will be primarily focused on training for Alpine climbing of the snow and ice type, but is also applicable to Alpine rock climbing.
Requirements/Prerequisites: Designed for climbers who already have a grasp of the basics.
